What’s all the hype with Amazon’s voice-enabled Alexa devices?

It’s no secret technology has changed the way we live and manage our businesses. We have multiple ways to communicate with one another, gather information and make online purchases. Technology has been driving innovation and has sprouted the new digital era of modern commerce. The way we run our businesses has changed drastically and will continue to evolve as we move forward.

One of the most significant changes in technology has been around voice-activated technology. Last year, Google announced that 20% of queries on its mobile app and Android devices are voice searches. You can safely assume that number has increased based on Google’s announcement that it added 30 new languages to voice typing technology. You can even voice type emojis now.

According to ComScore, by the year 2020 50% of searches will be done without a screen or via voice activation. And according to a recent article on Inc.com, author John Brandon predicts that the smartphone will become extinct by 2025. The reason? Artificial intelligence (AI) and voice-enabled search.

So, what does the future hold for businesses that adopt modern commerce strategies?

The Power of Voice

Combine Google’s apps and Google Home devices with Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa, and you’ve got a whole lot of people talking to technology to research, find and purchase with just the sound of their voices. Not yet sold on the power of voice for frictionless commerce? Check out these stats from Walker Sands Communications’ The Future of Retail 2017 report:

  • Consumers who have made a purchase using a voice-controlled device in the past year: 19%
  • Percentage of millennials who have purchased via a voice-controlled device in the past 12 months: 43%
  • Of those millennials, 37% report they always or often use voice-enabled online shopping

Businesses That Are Listening

Obviously, Amazon is capitalizing on the voice-enabled purchasing trend and investing $100M in Alexa. With Amazon’s robust online marketplace, shoppers with an Alexa device can quickly and easily make purchases. Amazon also partners with companies to make it easy for shoppers to book a flight or hotel room or order a pizza with Alexa. Alexa may be on its (her?) way to becoming a one-stop voice shop.

However, Amazon isn’t the only player in the voice-enabled shopping game. Google has partnered with both Target and Walmart via its Google Express service. Shoppers can use their Google Home devices for voice-enabled shopping, as well as other devices that feature the Google Assistant.

The New PROS Skill on Alexa

At the end of each tip, you’ll be directed to a dedicated microsite to learn more about modern commerce trends and strategies.
